A 50-year-old homeless woman was run over on Sunday in New Delhi's Connaught Place by a 20-year-old woman. The woman was killed on the spot. The accident occurred late Sunday night when the accused Shreya Agarwal, was speeding on the wrong side of the road in Connaught Place's Outer Circle.

The victim, identified as Phoolwati, was a homeless woman who used to beg on the streets. She was dragged for several meters by Agarwal's Jeep.

According to witnesses, Agarwal did not stop her car after the accident and tried to escape along with her two friends, who were also sitting in the expensive car. She was finally apprehended at a police checkpoint near the crime scene.

Agarwal, a fashion designing student, hails from a business family in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, she had come from Bareilly and was to leave for Mumbai on Monday. She met her friends at Connaught Place and the trio was out for a joyride.

The police arrested her under charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving of the IPC. She was later released on bail on Sunday itself.

The police are waiting for a blood alcohol report of the accused to ascertain if she was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
